Majorda Beach

Dudhsagar Falls

The milky cascade of white water in the form of a tumbling fall from a height of more than 1017 feet is what is Dudhsagar Falls is all about. It gushes out of a mountain creek and climbs down the steep, vertical rock face to form a breath-taking spectacle that is a coveted and awe-inspiring tourist attraction and a natural wonder. True to the name ‘Dudhsagar’ which means ‘sea of milk’, the waterfall sprays a white foam of falling curtain of water that forms a pool at the base.  The falls swells to its lavish best during the monsoon season but is a popular tourist attraction all through the year. Dudhsagar Falls is as enchanting as the mythical story behind it. There are beautiful mythical legends associated with the waterfall and it is believed that this waterfall was once the abode of a beautiful princess. The story goes on to proclaim that the princess used to drink sweetened milk from a golden jug. Once when she was drinking her milk after taking her bath, she discovered a prince watching her. To save her modesty, it is said, she had poured the jug of milk that formed a milky curtain of waterfall.

Flea Markets of Goa Overview

The flea markets of Goa are the local attractions and haven for shopping freaks. Area wise the flea markets attract shopper’s crowd. Baga Beach

Baga Beach is one of the most happening and famous beaches of Goa. You will always find the tourists and travellers indulging in some exciting activity along the beach. Arambol Beach has a serene beauty and is one of the most famous beaches of North Goa. It does not remain too crowded as some other popular beaches and remains relatively less exploited by tourists. For the ones who would like to spend a lengthy stretch at Arambol and take in the flavours of Goa, they can join the Yoga classes on the beach which is said to do wonders to keep you fit and fine. It is one of the northernmost beaches of Goa and has the Querim Beach bordering one of its sides and the Morjim Beach on the other side. Arambol Beach has its fair share of a mix of sand and greenery with of course the beautiful sea scaping its front.

The soft white sands on the banks of Arambol Beach are believed to possess healing properties and are also ideal for sunbathing. Arambol Beach has a long stretch of curve that acts as an ideal location for swimming in the seas. Among the activities that the beach offers are paragliding and dolphin watching boat trips.

Reis Mogos Fort

Rein Magos is a quaint little village located in the northern banks of Mandovi river. The village is marked as a shining tourist spot on account of the Reis Magos or Reis Mogos Fort and the Reis Magos Church, located close to the Fort and supposedly the first church of Bardez area of Goa. The Church holds a special significance for its colourful ‘Fiesta dos Reis Magos’ which is also noted as the Feast of the Three Wise Men. This feast attracts a joyful host of crowd to this place every year and is celebrated on the 6th of January every year.

The Reis Mogos Fort has sturdy wall built of laterite and fitted with Portuguese turrets. The fort was completed in the year 1551 but then was re-built on 1707. The fort assumed historical importance for it used to be the accommodation of the royal viceroys and dignitaries who arrived at Goa during the Portuguese occupancy from Lisbon. It also stood strong against all attacks from the Marathas who never could conquer it.

The Fort commands a spectacular view of the Mandovi River and its estuary. The fort was also briefly occupied by the British during the period 1798 to 1813. The fort was later on restored and converted to a fortress. After it was abandoned by the military forces, it served as a prison till 1993.

Shri Mangeshi Temple

Shri Mangueshi Temple is dedicated to the deity Lord Mangueshi. The resident deity is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva in several regions of Goa. The temple is located at a feasible distance of 22 kilometres from the capital of Goa.

There is an interesting mythological story associated with the name of the temple and its deity. It is believed that Lord Shiva had wandered to this part of the land where the temple now stands. He was dejected after having been defeated by his consort Parvati in a game of dice. Goddess Parvati came in search Shiva and the Lord tried to frighten Her by assuming the shape of a tiger. Upon seeing the Lord as tiger Parvati screamed in fear and said the words “Trahi Mam Grisha”, which means “O Lord of the Mountains, save me”. Hearing her distress call Shiva transformed himself back to his usual self and returned to their abode Kailash with Parbati. Keeping this mythological story in mind, the temple was dedicated to Lord Manguesh. And Shiva was identified as Lord Manguesh. Thus the Shri Mangueshi Temple came to being.

Maghi Purnima is a special festival of this temple and is held in the month of February every year. The temple has an open courtyard which sees a lot of wedding celebrations and pilgrims from far and near.

The central and most prominent structure of the temple which is known as “Deepastambha” or lamp tower is imposing and ornate and very captivating. The tower is the tallest and most impressive column in the whole of Goa and looks extremely picturesque when illuminated at night with traditional oil lamps during the festivals.

Reis Magos Church

The small and quaint village of Reis Magos situated on banks of the Mandovi river is noted for the Reis Magos Fort and the Reis Magos Church. The Church is widely known in Goa for the Feast of the Three Wise Men that is held of the 6th of January every year. As you wander through the fishing and boat-building villages of Betim and Verem and explore the happening Calangute and Candolim beaches you reach the village of Reis Magos. The Church in white façade can be seen from across the river Mandovi in Panaji. It was built in the year 1555. The Reis Magos church has been dedicated to St. Jerome. Some historians are of the opinion that the Church has been built on the ruins of an old Hindu temple. They even have proofs in support.

The church premises has the burial of two of Goa´s former Viceroys. Their tombstones have Portuguese and Latin inscriptions etched on them for public viewing.

The church has exceptionally bright and intricate interiors. The wooden ceiling exhibits the Three Wise Men carrying gifts for Baby Jesus. This is the principal idea behind the church’s inception.

Se Cathedral

Se Cathedral is one of the oldest and most prominent religious buildings of Goa. This cathedral stands magnificently since the 16th century . It was built in Roman Catholic era in Goa which was then under the Portuguese dominance. It is the biggest church in Asia. The Cathedral has been dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. This church is also referred to as St. Catherine’s’ Cathedral.

The Cathedral is bigger than any church in Portugal. Such is its grandeur. The construction of the church was commissioned by the Portuguese Viceroy, Redondo. It was intended that it would be the grandest edifice in the locality and a symbol of Portuguese fame and power and rightly it is so.

The throne of Archbishop of Goa is placed near the main altar inside the Church. It is also believed that a vision of Christ had emerged on the Miraculous cross in 1919 placed inside the church and also that the cross is continually increasing in size. The tower has a magnificent bell that is often referred to as the Golden Bell. The bell has an exceptionally rich tone and is the largest bell in Goa. It is also one of the most magnificent bells in the whole world. The church has an adjoining convent that has been converted to an Archaeological Museum and is open for public viewing.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

The Basilica of Bom Jesus was built way back in 1594.  The church was consecrated in 1605 and the date more or less coincides with the beginning of the spread of Christianity in India. This church holds a prime importance as this is the oldest church in Goa. And it is also important on account of the fact that it holds the remains of the great St. Francis Xavier. The body of this great saint has miraculously survived the ravages of time and is taken out once every decade to be viewed by the public.

The church floor is composed of marble that has precious stones embedded. A huge screen that adorns the interiors has an image of Saint Loyola and is seen blessing and protecting infant Jesus. This house of worship is about 410 years old and is open to public every day. The House of the Jesuits is just beside the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The museum that is located on the first floor of the Basilica contains paintings depicting the life of Saint Francis. The entry fee to this section is negligible. Basilica of Bom Jesus sees a heavy footfall of devotees and tourists and travellers during the Feast of St Francis Xavier which is held every year on the 3rd of December.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary

The Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is a different type of tourist attraction and is very popular among families and little children and especially among the nature lovers and environmentalists. The sanctuary has a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are some rare species of animals and plants. This place is of particular interest to photography enthusiasts to capture the rare animals in their natural best. The sanctuary covers an area of 8 square kilometres and thus it is possible to cover the sanctuary in a single day. The Bondla Wildlife sanctuary is located in Usgao-Ganjem. It is around 47 kilometres away from Panaji and connected well via public transport.

Located in the northeastern Goa, Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary has got the fearsome variety of animal species such as the leopards, cobras and is known for the successful breeding of gaurs and is also used as a research centre for animals. Some other animals inhabiting the sanctuary are rock python, sambar deer, hippopotamus, spotted dear, macaque, silver pheasant, wild boar and the fierce Bengal tiger. The area is covered mostly by deciduous trees and has more than an astonishing 100 resident species of birds.

Sada, Hivre and Charavne Waterfalls

Sada Waterfall is a magnificent waterfall tumbling down from the Chorla Ghats. While reaching this picturesque waterfall, you pass through the beautiful streams and water bodies. The water gushes down from between two mountain cliff faces and looks bewitchingly beautiful. The waterfall is approximately 200 feet high but other than the sound of tumbling waters the environment is serene and peaceful. Charavne Waterfall is another majestic work of nature. It is located in the village of the same name which is a peaceful village located 12 kilometres from the major city of Volpoi. To reach the waterfall, you need to trek for 12 kilometres.  The trek gets exciting if you undertake the journey with family and friends. Its breath-taking beauty is most magnanimous during the monsoon season.

Crab Catching at Candolim, Sinquerim, Calangute and Baga

The mightily memorable crab catching expeditions are generally carried out from Candolim, Sinquerim, Calangute and Baga beach pickup points. It is interesting to know that these fresh-water crocodiles of Goa mostly are not dangerous predators and usually feed or prey on sick fish, birds, crabs, dogs, cats and sometime buffaloes or deer depending on the size of the crocodile. They feel hungry only once every two weeks or so to the relief of the watchers. These crocodiles are a hole-nesting species and they lay eggs in pit away from the edge of the water. The eggs are ferociously guarded by the mother crocodile and there are around 30 eggs in a clutch out of which merely two or three hatchlings survive at the end.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary

Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary is a unique tourist spot of Goa. This Sanctuary along with the Mollem National Park is located in the Western Ghats in Sanguem Taluk of Goa. The sanctuary covers a total area of 240 square kilometres. It is large protected enclosure located close to the town of Molem. Molem is also very well known for other famous tourist spots such Dudhsagar Falls. The protected area was initially named the Mollem Game Sanctuary and later in the year 1969, it attained the stature of a wildlife sanctuary and was renamed Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary.

The core area comprises 107 square kilometres was came to be known as Mollem National Park in 1978. The park has a crowd of trees classified into three different categories, such as, West Coast tropical evergreen forests, West Coast semi evergreen forests and moist deciduous forests. The several perennial water sources are the major source of water to the sanctuary and the nearby areas.

A great variety of animal and bird species live in complete harmony inside the sanctuary. The species found here are black panther, Bengal tiger, barking deer, common langur, flying squirrel, gaur, Malabar giant squirrel, porcupine, leopards, bonnet macaque, civet and many more. The sanctuary also houses a large number of bird species such as drongo, emerald dove, fairy bluebird, greater Indian hornbill, Indian black woodpecker, grey headed mynah and more. The birds and animals have also the company of beautiful butterflies, fierce reptiles, variety of insects and other similar species.

Visiting the Butterfly Conservatory is an exhilarating experience. Watching the colourful flitting winged creatures is one of the most enjoyable things to do in South Goa. The Hablekar couple who had conceptualized and started this conservatory was aiming to preserve the endemic species of butterflies of this particular region. To start off, only 25 species of butterflies were present in the conservatory. Hearteningly, currently, the number has increased to 133. Temperature conditions and soil and other prerequisites are maintained to promote breeding and growth of butterfly population. This conservatory was initially named the Mystic Meadows Conservatory.
